Professor Peter van der Meer is a cardiologist and Chair of the Department of Experimental Cardiology at the University Medical Center Groningen, and Full Professor of Cardiology at the University of Groningen.
He obtained both his MD and PhD cum laude from the University of Groningen and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where he trained in stem cell biology. His multidisciplinary research group focuses on translational cardiology, aiming to bridge the gap between bench and bedside by studying the mechanisms underlying heart failure and identifying novel therapeutic targets.
Professor van der Meer has authored over 350 scientific publications (H-index >100) and has contributed to key European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines, including the 2016 Heart Failure Guidelines and the 2022 Cardio-Oncology Guidelines. He serves on several steering committees for early-phase and large-scale clinical trials investigating innovative treatments for heart failure.
He has received major research funding from the Dutch Heart Foundation, NWO, the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, the HFSP, and the European Research Council, where he was awarded both Starting and Consolidator Grants.
